It is in modern (British) English. Americans never got the hang of it, so whenever used in the States, a single e is substituted. Anyone ever heard of Æon Flux?

See the Wikipædia entry ^_^

I like how this thread is going

Just for the record, here's a sample of what I've made by hounding various companies over defective products or discontent with my purchase.

- xbox 360
- $4,750 american
- a new microwave
- nVidia 8800GT
- 1 bottle of hand lotion (don't ask)

Seriously, when something breaks or wears out, don't just buy a new one. Contact the company and complain until they just send you something to get you to stop bothering them. Use paper letters. Unlike emails, they can't just delete them and claim there was a server error. Whining does pay off

No, it does, it works in All Chat.

That particular character in names, rather. I know I've never seen it, and I've certainly seen a lot of names, though surely I could be mistaken--I still wouldn't get my hopes up.

Its an obvious reason no amount of pestering support can change everyone elses keyboards.
And before anyone says it alt+numpad is fairly complex ot the average pc user and most gw players wont even know about it, basic keyboard in this case willl be the qwerty keyset.
That's exactly why this won't happen. 99% of PC users won't know how to type the characters. It's just a rather meaningless name, suck it up and get over it. No need to rewrite half the character creation system just so you can have a special name.

thats so you can talk to people in other languages. You can use letters with accents on them to talk to people n french, but you can't make names with accents. Its the same thing.

- There is no rewriting of the character system needed, Gw already supports it, simply flags it as not permitted in names.

- Due to the background of this particular name I would prefer to keep it accurate. So I plan to pester them for a few days and see how it goes. My hopes are not high, but I like to at least try at stuff instead of just quitting.

Same is true for numbers, latvian letters, and Kanji as is true for your danish æ: they're not English letters and hence not allowed in names, but they are allowed in chat.

Well, good luck. The windmills are waiting.

My Zboard Merc does have a number pad, and if I have numlock off I can still use the number keys across the top of the qwerty keyboard.

Only use I have seen for æ is for Mediæval Bæbes. Oh, and Æon Flux of course. To state that æ is part of the english language is like saying that Latin is English.

It's not available to use on my copy either, and I'm in England using the Euro servers. Seen as I use 'English' English, and not the bastardised variety, why can't I use it?

If they started allowing freaky alt+whatever characters in names I could see a whole army of bots/griefers using them and people not knowing what to type to put them on ignore. No thanks.

Recite the English (British) alphabet from a to z. Notice what's NOT in there?
I don't know where Wikipedia got the idea that æ is still in use in British English, because it's not really; just like in the US (incidentally Æon Flux is a *US* cartoon) it is used only as a stylistic touch, a novelty.

Agreed
There shouldn't be any such thing as "Standard American English" certainly not in written form.

It should be referred to as Standard American

edit
The AE as a single symbol is used in many languages and it is important but generally not used in modern English.
It really comes into usage for Latin words or phrases.
We could go into Ligatures and Latin Dipthongs etc but I certainly havn't had need to use them in my life.
I should spell ACHAEOLOGY as ARCHÆOLOGY It is more accurate a spelling but it is inconvenient to have to hold down alt and type 0198 all the time.

there is a trend to call what we speak in the usa as american instead of american english as the two languages become farther apart from the original english spoke/written years ago....
When I was teaching 'englsh' in japan we had a very long discussion about the two ---and soon we realized that american will be realized as its own language separate from english ....
so what we teach in schools is now called standard american english. ugh.

Why not just use the phonetic equivalent to the 'æ' instead? If you just want it to look cool, then you'll have no luck convincing anyone.

Just look at the O-Umlaut in German. The phonetic equivalent in 'oe' because it produces the same desired sound.
